BGAN proves a global success as fastest-growing service
Thursday, 07.06.2007

Inmarsat's ground-breaking mobile broadband offering, BGAN, has become our fastest growing service during the first year of operation on both Inmarsat-4 satellites. BGAN has proven to be a worldwide success, with 10,000 terminals activated within the first 12 months of service. Already deployed in more than 175 countries, it is proving the essential tool for anyone who needs reliable voice and data connectivity beyond the reach of terrestrial networks.

It is a "must have" for international broadcasters, aid agencies, oil and gas companies, and government agencies.

High-profile users include:

Inmarsat-sponsored Télécoms Sans Frontières - the UN-appointed specialist in emergency telecoms
The BBC and CNN - sending frequent live and recorded "videophone" reports from the world's hotspots
The US Federal Emergency Management Agency (Fema) - equipping disaster first response teams with more than 500 BGANs, and
Canadian energy company Petro Canada - supplying terminals to its engineers and small teams working in the field.
Drew Brandy, Inmarsat's head of land mobile services, said: "BGAN has shown that it can take Inmarsat deeper into its core markets, but can also penetrate new markets and attract users that would not previously have considered satellite communications.

"BGAN is easy to carry and quick to deploy, and it continues to prove itself by delivering broadband communications where terrestrial networks simply cannot reach."

Secure access
BGAN offers simultaneous voice and broadband data communications, at speeds of up to 492kbps, for secure access to telephony and virtual private networks, the internet and email.

Whenever the local telecoms infrastructure is unreliable or non-existent, the mobile broadband communications service can be quickly deployed to establish essential communications.

"We are working with our partners to maintain the high levels of service, support and innovation that our end-users expect, ensuring that BGAN continues to bring connectivity wherever it is most needed," added Drew Brandy.
