Globalstar, Inc., today announced that six new second-generation Globalstar satellites were successfully launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. The Globalstar satellites were launched on Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at 11:09:02 p.m. local Baikonur time (5:09 p.m. UTC and 12:09 p.m. EDT) using the Soyuz-Fregat version of the Soyuz launch vehicle. With 18 new satellites now in orbit, fourth launch is expected to restore industry leading mobile satellite voice and data services.

The Government Protection Bureau (GPB) announced its selection of the best bid in the proceedings for awarding a public contract for telecommunications services within the satellite communications system. The tender was won by TS2 Satellite Technologies from Warsaw - they will provide global connections for Iridium 9505a and Sailor SC4000 satellite phones, which are used by GPB officials.

TS2 awarded a contract for the supply of 150 satellite phones to the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The equipment is intended to secure communication in the event of emergency and the phones will be provided to Polish ambassadors and consuls across the world. Diplomats frequently visit regions where no conventional mobile telecommunication system is available. Now they can use satellite connections ensuring global coverage and safety.

Inmarsat announced that the first call has been made using its global handheld service, IsatPhone Pro, which is on track for launch in June 2010. A contract to upgrade the Inmarsat ground network was completed on schedule by Lockheed Martin, and further testing on the integration between the handset and the ground network is underway. Inmarsat’s partner for the handset development is Sasken Communications Technologies.
